The annual Finnish Championships in tango dance is held at the Tango festival in Seinäjoki. The competition starts at Tangokatu (tango street) at Wednesday 10.7. at 7pm.
The hosts of the competition are Tango King Jukka Hallikainen and Marko Maunuksela. The leader of the competition is Niina Huhtala.
The competition is recorded and will be presented later at the AlfaTV channel.
Participation
The competition is open for all dancers. The idea of the competition is to dance free style tango to a Finnish music the dancers do not know in advance. Participation in the competition is free of charge.
There are two divisions one can attend to – general and senior. The general division is open for everyone, whereas in senior division the male dancer has to be over 60 years old.
It is possible to sign up for the competition in advance with the website form or at the information desk located at Tanssitalo (Dance house). The sign up will be closed at 4pm at the competition day.
Competition day schedule
- 4.00 pm – sign up is closed
- 5.30pm – competitor numbers can be picked up at Tangokatu (Vapaudenkatu)
- 5.30pm – warm-up space will be opened
- 7.15pm – qualification
- 9.15pm – semifinals and finals
- 11pm – award ceremony and show time of the winners
Awards
From both divisions the six best will be rewarded with a diploma. The three best will be given prizes donated by Suomen Tanssipuoti and entrance for the Tango festival 2020. The winners of both divisions will also be invited to perform at the Tango festival 2019.

Rules
The tango dance should be free style with the male leading and the female following the free expression of music. The dancers should keep closed connection with each other throughout the dance, the dance positions may have variations. The Finnish social dance etiquette should be obeyed.
The jury will observe the dancers according to the following criteria:
- Music expression
- implementation of basic rhythm
- expressing the mood of the song
- phrasing the song
- fluctuation in the dynamics
- Technical implementation of the dance
- posture and lining
- transition and movement
- technique and dance position
- Communication with the dance partner
- mutual dance position
- common movement and dancing
- transmitting the feeling of tango
- Dance etiquette and taking into account other dancers
