The annual Finnish Championships in tango dance is held during the Tango festival in Seinäjoki at the dance school Wimma’s “Wiihde Areena”. The competition starts at Friday 8.7. at 5pm.
The host of the competition is Mika Väkiparta. The leader of the competition is Niina Tammelin.
Participation
The competition is open for all dancers. The idea of the competition is to dance free style tango to a Finnish music the dancers do not know in advance. Participation in the competition is free of charge.
There are two divisions one can attend to – general and senior. The general division is open for everyone, whereas in senior division the male dancer has to be over 60 years old.
We recommend to sign up for the competition in advance with the website form. If it is not possible to use the website form you can also sign up at the information desk located at Tanssikoulu Wimma (Dance School Wimma). The sign up will be closed at 1pm at the competition day.
Competition day schedule
- 1.00 pm – sign up is closed
- 3.00pm – competitor numbers can be picked up at Tanssikoulu Wimma (Dance School Wimma) at dance camp info.
- 4.00pm – warm-up space will be opened
- 5.00pm – competition open for audience
- 5.15pm – qualification
- 8.00pm – semifinals and finals
- 9.00pm – award ceremony and show time of the winners
Awards
From both divisions the six best will be rewarded with a diploma. The three best will be given prizes donated by Suomen Tanssipuoti and entrance for the Tango festival 2023.

Rules
The tango dance should be free style with free expression of music, one partner is leading and the other is following during the whole competition. The dancers should keep closed connection with each other throughout the dance, the dance positions may have variations. The Finnish social dance etiquette should be obeyed.
The jury will observe the dancers according to the following criteria:
- Music expression
- implementation of basic rhythm
- expressing the mood of the song
- phrasing the song
- fluctuation in the dynamics
- Technical implementation of the dance
- posture and lining
- transition and movement
- technique and dance position
- Communication with the dance partner
- mutual dance position
- common movement and dancing
- transmitting the feeling of tango
- Dance etiquette and taking into account other dancers
